[COVID-19]UNEMPLOYMENT ALLOWANCE

You must be covered by unemployment insurance

  • Regular working hour: 20 hours a week or more;
  • Supposed to work for 31 days or more.

  • All appropriate workers are to become insured persons no matter what kind of company you are belong to. And it is a business owner who must carry the procedure of Employment Insurance. Any employees may retroactively will be covered by the insurance in case that the procedure has not been taken.

    Requirement 1: How to know? You are insured or not

    All insured should have received “Notice of acquisition of the employment insurance qualification” and “The certificate of the insured of employment insurance” from Hello Work. Please make an inquiry to your company or Hello Work about whether you are covered.

    There is also a special employment insurance for those employed by daily basis. If you are not insured, you should ask Hello Work to issue the insurance book for daily work insured person.

    Requirement 2: Being UNEMPLOYED

    Being unemployed must meet all the following conditions.

  • Having the ability such as health condition and the environment to start working whenever needed;
  • Being unemployed though you have positively tried to find a job.

  • NOTE:This does not only mean that you have any intention like “I want to get a job!” but also that you need to act with it (such as registration for Hello Work or consult with Agent and ‘actual’ job hunting).

    It is expected that there are more and more cases where workers are getting fired due to COVID-19. In this case, you may be permitted to work part-time job after applying for “permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted”. (up to 28 hours a week, for 3 month)

    How you retired and when/how long you can get allowance

    When you will get the benefit and how many days you will get it depend on the reason for retirement. And also there is a requirement of the period of employment insurance.

  • The insured period should be 1 year or more over the past 2 years at a previous workplace.


  • When I can get allowance?
  • After 3 months you have resigned

    NOTE:Working visa(EX:ENGINEER/SPECIALIST IN HUMANITIES/INTERNATIONAL SERVICES) will be INVALID if 3 months have passed since you lost your job. However, there is still a possibility to obtain another resident status “Designated Activity(Shukatsu Visa)” if you continue job hunting.

    How much I can get?


    it will be calculated based on how much you have been paid for current 6 months from Ex-employer;

    This is sample

    You have been paid monthly 220,000 yen/month for current 6 months , 220,000 yen * 6 months/ 180 days = 7,333 yen/day.

    But actual payment, Percentage will be multiplied 1) over 80%, 2) 50 to 80% 3) 50% or 4) under 50%.

    And you will have limitation based on your age;
